They Will Say You're Nuts - A Poem

They will say you’re nuts

They will say you’re nuts

that you’re too sensitive

too dramatic

You will have your pain lessened

To fit in justifications

that justify nothing

They will say you’re nuts

You will be looked down with pity

You will be seen as some kind of horror

By people who only know

half of the story

They will advise you to go to therapy, to love yourself,

to find something to do with your life

They'll tell you it was no big deal

even if, to you,

it was extremely painful

They will say you’re nuts

Not once, but several times

And maybe the people who were by your side

May actually agree

Nuts, sensitive, dramatic, immature

And you will start to believe

That you’re crazy, that you overreacted, that you deserved

That you didn't clearly understood,

All that shouting, that invalidation, that slap

Or the deafening silence

of manipulation

They will say you’re nuts

And I hope you know

That this is the lowest form

that the world could find

to make us feel inadequate

for ourselves

And that only those who actually lived

Could say what was real or not

It's not up to others, mere spectators

To judge what is right or wrong for you

They will say you’re nuts

And I pray that it won’t,

in fact

turn you nuts for true
